| Wells weren't always drilled with a rotary auger. Until the mid 20th century, wells were made with a cable tool bit. Using a walking beam hoist (not unlike a modern pumping rig), a heavy sharpened iron drilling point was suspended by a cable and repeatedly dropped a few feet at the bottom of the hole, making it a little deeper each time. |
